Their first mini-album which had a massive impact and this can truly be said "shocking." Though the songs included were only six, but this one is enough to tell the features, charms of Fishbone sufficiently and is full of power. We can see here the mixture of many kinds of music elements like ska, funk, reggae, punk and this chaos dashing at unbelievable speed with the power of youth. Their style was apparently far beyond the one of classic "black music." The producer was David Kahn who known by his work with The Bangles. He found Fishbone and arranged the contract with CBS. He kept on producing till "Truth and Soul." Amazingly, the ages of members were only about seventeen to twenty at that time. We can see, in the pictures of that era, almost "Gangsta" look-like young guys in the poor area of L.A. But this band already had a high consciousnes of social problems, political problems from their debut as we can see in their songs, such as the anti-power orientation, criticism to the modern society. In "Party at Ground Zero," or "V.T.T.L.O.T.F.D.G.F.(=Voyage Through the Land of the Freeze Dried Godzilla Farts)," they described the potential fear and madness about the nuclear war under the continuing cold war between the United States and the Soviet Union at that time which everybody had in mind(as you might know, the staple food of Godzilla is radioactivity). In "Ugly," they criticize vulgar politicians. On the other hand, as they simply describe the feelings of the man who has been betrayed by his girl friend, singing these elements(political issues and private issues) at the same revel, may be the most interesting and characteristic part of Fishbone. It must be said just unbelievable that there appeard a band who embodied a exploding punk ska music, differently from the "Two Tone" Revel bands like Specials, Madness. Fishbone just stepped beyond these ska bands and has an influence on many bands later whose style called "Ska-core." It's the great beginning of Fishbone's music. |
